About Our Members - VPs of Health Research

As part of the organization’s overall structure, the Board of Directors has established a Sub-Committee that focuses on the strategic policy issues related to the health research, innovation and commercialization enterprise. The Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors, and usually meets twice per year.

Members of the Sub-Committee are the Vice-Presidents and Directors of Health Research whose institutions are members of the Association. The Sub-Committee is Co-chaired by Dr. Vassilios Papadopoulos (Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer, Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre) and Dr. David Hill (Scientific Director, Lawson Health Research Institute, St. Joseph's Health Care London).

In broad terms, the areas of focus of the Sub-Committee include:

• Contributing to the development of a national strategic plan of action for health research, innovation and commercialization .
  
  
• Reviewing the structural alignment of national agencies that focus on health research innovation and commercialization.
  
  
• Enhanced (multi-year) funding for the federal agencies that support the dimensions of the health research enterprise (e.g., The Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Genome Canada, Canada Foundation for Innovation - and its Research Hospital Fund, Canada Research Chairs).
  
  
• Increasing multi-year funding for the Indirect Costs of (health) research program.
  
  
• Developing appropriate survey instruments to capture the funding of Canada’s health research, innovation and commercialization enterprise.
  
  
• Developing a methodological approach to better define and measure the dimensions of the “return-on-investment” that comes from health research, innovation and commercialization.
